CAWSES II One-Day Workshop: CME/ICME and Solar Wind

The solar wind and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are intrinsically three-dimensional (3-D) structures. However, until recently, only in situ measurements at a few points in space (Earth, Mars, Venus, Ulysses) and limited remote-sensing observations (limited to the 15% closest to the Sun) allowed us to learn about these two complex phenomena. Recently, the development of 3-D numerical models, the construction of larger scintillation arrays and the launch of new spacecraft (Coriolis, Hinode, STEREO and SDO) have allowed scientists to investigate in deeper details the 3-D structure of the solar wind and of coronal mass ejections. The workshop of the task group 3 of CAWSESII on October 20, 2010 in Kwasan Observatory, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan provided a forum to present the latest advancement in our understanding of CMEs and the solar wind. About 30 scientists participated, from the field of solar and heliospheric physics, focusing on observations, theory and numerical simulations.
